Giant Tortoise Escaped – Lost and Found After 4 Years

BRENTWOOD, N.H. —

Imagine the shock a couple in Brentwood got after their 25-pound tortoise dug her way out of her pen only to arrive back on their street nearly four years later.

The African Spur Thigh tortoise escaped from her pen at the Wellington Gardens in Brentwood.  It was October and owners, Mike and Christine Wellington, had little hope that she would survive given winter was approaching.  However, Lucy’s species is native to the Sahara Desert and she knew exactly where to go to survive.

“When it’s really dry, those tortoises will dig a hole (several) feet deep and sit for a year and wait for it to rain,” said Mike Wellington. “And when it rains they come out and eat grass, so she must have dug a hole and sat there through the winters.”  Friday night the Wellingtons got a call from a neighbor who lives a half mile up the road. Lucy was alive.

Now about 35 pounds heaver than when she left, the Wellingtons are confident this is their escape artist.

Lucy was extremely hungry when she came home.  The people who found her gave her two heads of lettuce. Then she ate a bunch of kale and summer squash. Lucy is 10 years old now, and if future adventures end safely like this one, she could live to be 80 years old.

Lost & Found Reward Inflation?

Lost iPod Touch Reward

It appears that as our hand-held gadgets increase in price, so are the rewards for the recovery and return of those valuable lost items.  While the effectiveness of a hand-made sign in a window can be debated; you can’t deny the creativity of the second guy who came along to post his alternative $51 reward.

If the person who lost their iPod touch had put an asset label on his device when he purchased it, he might not have to go through the hassle of making signs to get it back.

Stolen Vintage Volkswagan Found 35 Years Later

Stolen Volkswagan Found 35 Years Later

Stolen Volkswagan Found 35 Years Later

This is an unbelievable lost and found story about a 1965 Volkswagen van stolen 35 years ago in Spokane, Washington; found by customs agents in a shipping container in the Los Angeles port last month, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official said.

The blue van, discovered in immaculate condition, was headed for Germany along with several other vintage Volkswagens, Customs and Border Protection Port Director Todd Hoffman said.

This was shocking news to the Arizona shipping company who had no idea the vehicle was stolen from a Spokane auto shop in 1974, Hoffman said.

It is routine for Customs and Border Protection agents to run vehicle identification numbers (VIN) through the National Insurance Crime Bureau database with asset tracking for all vehicles loading on ships for export, he said. Usually when they recover stolen vehicles (about once a week), they are high-end luxury cars.  While the van was likely worth just several hundred dollars when it was stolen, the VW is now valued at about $27,000.

Allstate Insurance Company, which paid the original owner for the loss decades ago, now owns the van, according to Allstate spokeswoman Megan Brunet.   The insurance company has not decided if it will sell the van at auction — which is the routine — or put it to other use because of it’s history, she said.

Over 1,000 Pieces of Missing Luggage Found

stolen luggage found in Pheonix

Have you ever flown through Phoenix, AZ and ended up with missing luggage?

Well, a recent lost and found police investigation may have uncovered the mystery.

Last Tuesday, detective Homes said police have recovered more than 1,000 missing bags from the home of a couple in a western suburb of Phoenix. In a helicopter video shot by CNN affiliate KNXV, dozens of pieces of black luggage were seen lined up in the front yard of the home in the shade of palo verde trees.

The bags were inside the home Keith Wilson King and Stacey Lynne Legg-King in Waddell, he said.  The suspects were arrested Monday afternoon.

Phoenix Police Officer Luis Samudio said that during an investigation into missing luggage, King was spotted by officers walking out of the Sky Harbor International Airport with luggage that allegedly did not belong to him and arrested him.

The investigation continued and they later saw him back at the airport walking away with luggage again. They followed him to his home and executed a search warrant.

According to CNN affiliate KTVK, neighbors said they weren’t surprised and actually were waiting for something to happen. It was odd that they witnessed the 62-year-old King leaving with a horse trailer at night and come back with it packed full.  The neighbors said they never saw any horses.

Police arrested King on a felony count of burglary and Legg-King, 38, is being held on a felony count of tampering with evidence as well as additional charges.

All the bags are believed to have been stolen from Sky Harbor.   Holmes said authorities are continuing to investigate what the suspects were doing with the bags and whether they had accomplices.

I am suprised that the couple were able to walk in and out of the aiport baggage area, loading bags onto a horse trailer without someone getting suspicious.  They would have to pull the horse trailer into the parking lot!  Amazing that some schemes like this can be pulled off for so long without anybody saying something.

We are continuing our new weekly series featuring the funniest pictures, photos, signs or even drawing depicting anything lost and found.

Okay, so I admit I had to take a second glance at this photo.  The “STOP” part I get, along with the no left, no right, and no forward.  However, the second sign from the bottom clearly indicates you can’t even turn around and go back the way you just came!

Just another perfect example of why you should always tell someone where you’re going.  If you’re the unlucky one to drive up to this intersection, you could be lost forever!

Video Tour of London Tube’s Lost and Found

A quick tour around this lost and found in central London, UK posted by CNN reveals some unusual items.  Everything from a gorilla in life preserver, to prosthetic limbs, to false teeth are catalogued and waiting to be claimed.  They say that less than 30% of the lost items are returned simply because no one ever comes to claim them.

If you attach an asset label or id tag to your stuff, it won’t end up sitting in a brief case full of false teeth!

We are continuing our new weekly series featuring the funniest lost and found pictures we can find on the web.  They can be photos or actual signs posted by real people, even drawings.

This week’s photo features a missing Jack Russell Terrier with an incomparable feature.

I guess if London doesn’t have any tattoos, how else would you identify him?  I mean, ALL Jack Russell Terriers have spotted right ears, don’t they?  And why would anyone simply think of calling his name?

Maybe if the pooch was wearing an id tag he would be home safely by now.  However, I wonder if maybe the stud met a bitch who also noticed his distinctive set of reproductive organs and, well, let’s just say he’s happier where he is.
